What makes sound good in headphones?

Well, here’s some technical jargon which decides the Sound Quality of Headphones :

1. Frequency Response :

The factor that defines the “quality” of the audio produced by headphones.

So to give a clearer idea,

>> if you see this : (15 – 25,000 Hz) , in the specs section, this means 2 things.

a. The headphones produce audio with bass as low as 15 Hz.

b. The headphones also produce audio with treble (high pitch) as high as 25,0000 Hz.

The above values logically mean that the headphone have an excellent amount of range for the audio you’re listening to. So you could enjoy the complete experience of a song.

2. The earpieces, should possibly, have an airtight seal.

This provides the listener, the experience of perfect bass, because of the closed back, full size, In – Ear headphones.

But, taking into account the head shape, the closed back headphone’s output gets compromised. So the best option would be open back headphones, without the perfect airtight seal.

Especially if you’re listening to Trance, EDM, Dubstep, Skrillex, Metal, etc.

Open Back : More accurate & natural sounds. (open listening, e.g, studio recording)
Closed Back : Sound Isolation for the listener. (private listening)

Impedance :

How exactly do we know which is good?

low impedance ? (around 32 Ohms) or - high impedance ? (250 – 600 Ohms)

High Impedance : AC powered Amplifiers

Low Impedance : Battery powered Music Player

But, higher impedance is preferred due to more boss & better overall sound.

After all, it’s all upon the listener’s budget and preference.

Driver Size :

Driver size, should not be too large (>42mm). Since larger drivers result in irregular frequency response.
Maximum should be 42mm.

According to Sennheiser experts, the best driver size , which delivers pretty deep bass & superb high frequency sounds, is in the range of 6.5mm.

So apart from all this technical ‘know-how’, it’s always best to trust your ears.

Customers don’t always know what these words mean. They rely completely on the quality of sound. They rarely read these specs. And the sound quality usually differs, from human to human.

Never solely rely on only specifications. Always, I repeat, always test out the headphones if possible.
